Chickasaw Nation to Host Community Health Fairs during National Public Health Week

PURCELL, Okla.  — To celebrate National Public Health Week – the first full week of April – the Chickasaw Nation will host mini health fairs 10 a.m.-noon at the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center and satellite health clinics in Purcell, Tishomingo and Ardmore.

The health fairs are open to the public at no charge and will highlight programs and services the Chickasaw Nation offers to promote public health.
Dates and locations include:

April 1 – Chickasaw Nation Medical Center
April 2 – Ardmore Health Clinic
April 4 – Tishomingo Health Clinic
April 5 – Purcell Health Clinic

Many booths are planned for the health fairs, covering topics like nutrition, fitness, mental health, physical health and more.

Chickasaw Nation Health Promotion Coordinator Beth Cartwright said each site will highlight the programs they offer.

“We want patients to get familiar with the different opportunities available,” Cartwright said. “Through our public health programs, we strive to help individuals make the best choices for their overall health and well-being. Working together, we can build stronger, healthier communities.”

Health Fair Booths
The Ada health fair will include all of the following booths, among others. Health fairs in Purcell, Tishomingo and Ardmore will offer a selection of these booths, differing per location.

Diabetes Care Center
The Diabetes Care Center provides medical, educational, nutritional and exercise services addressing diabetes prevention, foot care, retinal photography, dental hygiene and behavioral health.

Prevention Services
Prevention services works to improve the overall health and quality of life for Chickasaw citizens, families and communities by promoting emotional well-being and reducing mental illness and substance use problems through education. It addresses topics like suicide prevention and intervention, depression, stress management, substance abuse, methamphetamine prevention, tobacco prevention and cessation, mental health, and more.

Chickasaw Nation Nutrition Services
Chickasaw Nation Nutrition Services offers nutrition information and support through the food distribution program (commodities), farmers’ market nutrition program (both summer farmers’ market checks and winter fruits and vegetables), summer food service program, Get Fresh! cooking classes, and the farm to school program. Dietitians are also available for consultation by phone or in person.

Chickasaw Nation Wellness Center
By offering fitness education, weekly group classes and mentorships, Chickasaw Nation Wellness Centers provide an inclusive and nurturing environment for anyone to improve their health. Skilled and dedicated teams partner with members and guests to help them reach their full potential. Classes are designed to improve strength, mobility, flexibility and quality of life. The facilities are open to the public for a fee. Children must be 10 years of age or older to use equipment.

Chickasaw Nation Audiology
The audiology program provides services in the diagnosis of hearing loss and ear disorders. Services include newborn hearing screenings, pediatric hearing evaluations, adult hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings and repairs. Audiology also performs vestibular evaluations and rehabilitation as needed. Audiology actively participates in prevention programs, including diabetic screenings, Head Start screenings and employee hearing screenings.
