Navajo Nation Office of President & Vice President Urges Navajos to Prepare for Winter Storm

WINDOW ROCK — As another winter storm is expected to impact the Navajo Nation this weekend, the Office of the President and Vice President is encouraging residents to be prepared, and to please look after elders in the community.

In case of an emergency, be sure to have wood, non-perishable food items and water. During a storm try to delay or avoid travel. If driving is necessary, be sure to pack an emergency kit in your vehicle. It should include blankets, a flashlight and batteries, an ice scraper, a small shovel and other snow removal equipment, a container of sand or kitty litter for traction and hazard warning lights, reflectors, or flares.

The Navajo DOT works with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, county road departments, state DOTs and others to maintain the roads. The division is currently making plans to be at full strength to clear snow and ice in the event of a storm. Despite the federal government shutdown and uncertainty about reimbursement, there are employees from the Bureau of Indian Affairs who have elected to return to work through Monday to clear the roads.
