Independence Day?

4th of July…..why should I celebrate?
They forced us to walk thousands of miles
just to relocate
Moved us from the only homes that we knew
Killed our women, children
and warriors too
We weren’t free to pursue our happiness
More like killed us with disease
and left us ravenous
Colonizers celebrate their freedom
from the mother land
While we are left to deal
with historical trauma first hand
How do we celebrate freedom
when we were torn from our ways?
Put on reservations and left to die
in a haze
Sure we love our country
and would like all back
But your boarding schools and stripping of identity
kind of threw us of track
What “unalienable Rights” did we have bestowed
upon us?
We weren’t even considered humans
and our land was put in trust
Sure we will celebrate when we are all free
But dang, it took over a hundred years
for us to be part of the “WE”
So as you celebrate just remember why we have a hard time
……American was built on genocide and crime.
