Bipartisan Resolution Commemorating the 30thAnniversary of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 Introduced in Congress

WASHINGTON — On Friday, U.S. Representatives Norma J. Torres (D-CA) and Tom Cole (R-OK) introduced a bipartisan resolution in recognition of the 30^th anniversary of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988. The resolution highlights the significant strides in education, healthcare, social services, and cultural representation that the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act has paved for Indian Country.

“Over the past 30 years, Native Americans have made invaluable contributions to strengthen our economy,” said Torres. “This resolution recognizes that entrepreneurial spirit, self-sufficiency, and economic potential. I will continue to support policies that rebuild communities and support the education of new leaders in Indian Country.”

“It is encouraging to see the difference that 30 years of improved policy can make for tribal nations. Since the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was signed into law, tribal enterprises have greatly thrived and created thousands of jobs,” said Cole. “Without question, the economic success of Native economies and governments strengthens their sovereignty, but surrounding communities directly benefit as well.”

The resolution was cosponsored by Representatives Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ), Don Young (R-AK), Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Betty McCollum (D-MN), and Frank Pallone (D-NJ).

Earlier this year, Torres and Cole introduced the Jobs for Tribes Act, which would support Indian Country’s ability to become more self-reliant and help tribes tap into their entrepreneurial spirit by providing urgently needed business and economic development assistance to American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
