PHOENIX — The San Carlos Apache Tribe, based in San Carlos, Arizona, confirmed on Tuesday that the 29-year-old woman in a vegetative state at Hacienda Healthcare in Phoenix who was raped and gave birth to a baby boy is an enrolled tribal citizen of its tribe.

“On behalf of the Tribe, I am deeply shocked and horrified at the treatment of one of our members. When you have a loved one committed to palliative care, when they are most vulnerable and dependent upon others, you trust their caretakers. Sadly, one of her caretakers was not to trusted and took advantage of her. It is my hope that justice will be served,” writes San Carlos Tribe Chairman Terry Rambler in a new release distributed by the Tribe on Tuesday.

It is reported the unidentified woman is from a loving American Indian family and that that baby is in the family’s care at this time.

In other news related to the case, the Phoenix police served a warrant on Tuesday to the Hacienda Del Sol facility to collect DNA samples from its male employees. The investigation continues.

“Hacienda stands committed to doing everything in our power to bring this police investigation to a quick conclusion,” the company statement said. “We will continue to cooperate with Phoenix Police and all other investigative agencies to uncover the facts in this deeply disturbing” situation.
