ALCATRAZ ISLAND — On the morning of Thursday, November 28th, 2019, several thousand American Indians and theirallies journeyed from San Francisco’s Pier 33 for the 20-minute boat ride to Alcatraz Island. The International Indian Treaty Council (IITC) hosted the 41st Annual Indigenous Peoples Sunrise Gathering.

This year’s gathering commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Alcatraz occupation that began on November 20, 1969 and lasted until June 21, 1971.

The attendees boarded the boats before dawn at the darkest part of night and were treated to a magnificent view of the San Francisco skyline.
