Native Actor Martin Sensmeier Spearheads 2019 “Stop Disenrollment” Campaign

SEATTLE — Today, the online visual advocacy movement Stop Disenrollment resumes for a fourth year.  Hollywood actor Martin Sensmeier spearheads this year’s movement.

Having acted in Wind River and Westworld, Sensmeier is next slated to star in Angelina Jolie’s Bright Path: The Jim Thorpe Story and Netflix’s World War II drama series The Liberator.

Sensmeier joins several prominent Indigenous persons who helped catalyze the movement during its first three years, including Hollywood actress Irene Bedard, former U.S. Vice Presidential candidate Winona LaDuke, rapper-actor-entrepreneur Litefoot, film director Chris Eyre, fashion designer Bethany Yellowtail, and Olympic Gold Medalist Billy Mills.

The visual advocacy movement is a grassroots indigenous reaction to tribal politicians who have exiled thousands of their own relatives from tribal communities, through a colonially inspired, terminationist practice called “disenrollment.”

Today hundreds of indigenous peoples are expected to post photographs of themselves protesting against disenrollment to the Stop Disenrollment webpage and to their personal social media pages. Thousands more will like and share those images on social media with the hashtag “StopDisenrollment.”
