Cherokee Heritage Center Receives Grant from Oklahoma Humanities Council

$8,500 grant to support cultural outreach program

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Cherokee Heritage Center’s Cultural Outreach Program is gearing up for a busy new year thanks to a grant from the Oklahoma Humanities Council. The $8,500 grant will be used to support the organization’s award-winning outreach program.

An initial gift of $3,500 was received from Cherokee Nation Tribal Council, allowing the heritage center to be eligible for the large award from OHC.

“Our cultural outreach program is a wonderful extension of the work we do here at the Cherokee Heritage Center each and every day,” said Charles Gourd, executive director for the Cherokee Heritage Center. “This program would not be possible without the generous support we receive from our tribal leaders and our community partners. We are thankful for our longstanding relationship with OHC, which continues to provide opportunities for us to further advance our mission to preserve, promote and teach Cherokee history and culture.”

The Cherokee Heritage Center’s cultural outreach program aims to engage and enlighten participants, inspire curiosity, and foster learning through hands-on art classes, interactive theatrical storytelling and cultural presentations. The program has been recognized by the American Association of State and Local History.
