WASHINGTON — On Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the House Democrats’ transformative anti-corruption legislation that also ensures voters have access to the ballot box. Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01) released the following statement after the H.R. 1 the For the People Act passed.

“As an organizer I’ve fought for access to voting rights for nearly two decades, and the For the People Act will ensure every voter has equal access to participate in our democracy,” said Congresswoman Deb Haaland. “I’m pleased the bill includes my provision to ensure any voter can register on the same day they vote, and am pleased it contains provisions that will put reign in corruption and the influence of money in politics.”

Last Thursday, Haaland presided over the House Floor during debate of H.R. 1, becoming the first Native American woman to sit in the Speaker’s chair.

Haaland is a long-time organizer who has worked to increase access to the ballot box in New Mexico and particularly in Indian Country and rural areas for nearly twenty years. The For the People Act includes her Same Day Voter Registration bill, which will ensure anyone who shows up to vote has the opportunity to participate in democracy.
